My iMac manufacture date is 2007. I have added 2GB of memory so it now has 4GB. It is running very happily on Yosemite, but I'm a bit nervous of adding any new operating system for its age.

The requirements say an iMac from mid 2007 and forward are compatible. So if it is mid 2007 it will work. I personally would not if Yosemite is working well for you. 10.11 El Capitan requires a bit more power and it may slow things down for you. I've seen 10.11 El Capitan work well with at least 8 gb of ram on the newer computers.
