forcing lower case letters when AutoCap is ON ??

Hello everyone,
This is my first post so please be gentle.

Although delighted with my 64g wifi iPad there is one irritation that I cannot seem to cure.

I have just tried to ask Apple but my 90 day help support has just run out !

Anyway, here goes;

I have Autocapitalisation switched to ON.

But there are some occasions when I want to type a lowercase letter. I have tried various ways of pressing the SHIFT key but still get capitals.

Apart from switching off the Autocapitalisation feature off is there any short cut ?
