Great roundup of reviews here - it's all about what is the best fit for you, and these reviewers cover all angles pretty comprehensively. Note that same dude who criticized display in his headline is also switching to Mini from a larger iPad. Headline doesn't tell the whole story, but it does attract web traffic.

I wouldn't recommend a Nexus 7 for a kid as I had one for a while and the thing feels very flimsy. It gets very, very hot when you play games on it and part of the screen can come loose from the frame. The rubber back can also pop off. The Kindle Fire HD looks pretty amazing though, and the price is incredible for what you get. iPad has more apps, sure, but I think I'd recommend the Kindle for your kid.

There is a lot to be said for getting what you know. If you already own ipads and are familar was iOS, then that may be the best way to go, since you can help the child learn and use the device.

You can't beat all the education apps in iOS for the kids along with ibooks. That's the real difference if you're planning on buying a tablet for a kid.

People might say the screen on the Kindle is better but to me I just can't see it. The screen is tiny compared to the Mini just look at the images on top of each other look at where the screen on the Mini starts and then the gap between that and where the screen on the Kindle starts. Then look at the side bezels on each one, the bezel on the Kindle is fat like it was eating McDonalds all the way through R&D. People might say the mini is not Retina but neither was the original iPad or the iPad 2 and the same people complaining about the Mini not having Retina probably owned both of those iPads and loved them. So when did non-Retina become such a plague? OP I say you go and take a look at a Mini in the Apple store get a feel for it play with it look at the screen. I don't know if there is anyway to feel out a Kindle but if there is do the same there and see if you like the thickness, weight and screen. Make a list of all the things that your kid will be using it to do and see which one fulfills all of the things. If they both do then it makes your choice even easier.

Wife had been eye-balling the Kindle as she just loved the size and how she would have been able to stuff it in her purse, etc... I ended up lucking out at Best Buy for her bday and picked up the Ipad Mini 32gb. She loves it, hopefully it doesn't end up under our bed like the ipad did..haha!!
