$199 would rock but it's wishful thinking. The iPod Touch is $249-$299. I'd bet my house the iMini will be $349.

Why? First of all, an 8gb version, especially when you don't have Amazon to stream stuff, will give your customers a subpar experience. It's just not enough space for content.

Um, how do you figure?

Apple likes to create a price spectrum in its products that overlap the next 'larger/nicer' product in the lineup. So I think $249 - $349 for the iPad Mini WiFi, and $399 - $499 for the iPad Mini 4G LTE, depending on memory. I think this is likely to be the case because it is unlikely the iPad Mini will have Retina display. This pricing structure puts it squarely between iPad 2 pricing and iPad 3 pricing.

I say $250-$300 starting at 16 maybe. Thats being easy on price and specs. And Apple normally sells their hardware on profit so i cna imagine it being more expensive than the nexus 7 which i currently own.

I'm calling it now - 8gb wifi $299, 16gb wifi $399. No LTE versions and iPad 2 goes bye bye. That's assuming dual cameras and retina display. If they strip it to basics then it'll be $249 and $349

Base model will be 16 Gig wifi at $249. Resolution will be 1024 x 768 or more likely, 1152 x 768.

I think they will go with 1152 x 768 even though, similar to the iPhone 5, legacy 1024x 768 iPad apps will have to be letterboxed.

Why 1152x 768? Why deal with more screen size fragmentation?
-Competition with other small tablets. 7" Nexus 7 is 1280 x 800. 7" Kindle Fire HD is also 1280 x 800. Even at 1152 x 768, the iPad mini will be lower resolution, especially considering the 7.85" or so size.
-Even ignoring the competition (not entirely unreasonable because of Apple advantages such as ease of use, massive ecosystem, and brand value), I think the improvement in the use of Safari, Mail, etc and the general improvement in user experience of a "sharper" screen will be worth the pain of supporting yet another resolution.

My son has a late October birthday. My finger will be poised over the "buy" button at midnight on October 24.

Im going with $299. They don't need to go any less as the market will bear that price. Any higher and it defeats the purpose of a cheaper iPad. A 2 is $399 and not many would buy a mini at just $50 less. Yes, there is a market that will buy it because of the smaller form factor but that market is a lot smaller than the one that will buy it because it's cheaper.

They are not trying to compete with Kindle on price, and never will.

Amazon sells Kindkes at cost, or thereabouts, and their business model s about making money selling content.

Apple does not use that business model, and makes money on their hardware.

Thats a bummer! Not spending over $300 for any tablet. My daughter has the original Kindle Fire and I actually enjoy using it to read, watch movies and play games. I am really steering hard towards the new Kindle HD for $200 unless the mini is priced close to $200 which it doesn't sound like it will be. :(

Tomorrow will be an interesting day for sure. I say this because when we posted the figured starting price ($200-$250) before summer and they were indeed accurate. If the prices did jump, something has to have changed.

And I won't be shocked if one still comes in on the low end... a price ending with "30" is not very Apple like unless... it's an LTE/4G model as is the case with the normal iPad. There is that $130 premium for that feature and if you subtract 130 from 330 what do you get? $200. But... who really knows.
