how about giving all protocols and applications a fair shake at API's. Apple's apps and services are given priority access to things like background processes and push. Gmail for example doesn't get IMAP IDLE, but is delegated to 15minute updates. Icloud = push imap.

Try disabling the contacts via the iCloud control panel, then re-enabling the contact sync. Hope that helps!

did you use a service like Google Sync, or MobileMe? using a Mac or PC? if PC, within iTunes, did you have your address book sync'd to outlook? otherwise, I'm not aware of any way to decode the "backup" and take away your contacts..
