I had a similar problem. I then thought about it. Where and when would I use the iPad. The majority of situations I found that I would really just use whatever smartphone I'm carrying simply because it's more portable and I'm more likely to carry it with me than an iPad.

Depends on if they're still using those microsim cards. Also depends on the 3G frequencies (you can check the frequency on Apple.com though). But they're not locked down otherwise.
The podcast and updated news on interesting applications. The forums are also useful since reddit.com/r/apple or reddit.com/r/ipad seems to be quiet from time to time.
I think that would depend on whether you want to use your iPad while playing videos on your TV. Since you wouldn't be able to do both at the same time.
I've never owned an Apple product, but I'd like to. Plus I think I wound find it useful to read the journal articles on rather than a traditional laptop.
