How are people selling the phones on ebay as factory unlocked when Apple hasn't announced a release date on these? I thought apple needs to unlock these but obviously these are still new in the box and haven't been activated yet. Can someone elighten me?

I'd have to say you had a pretty isolated incident, because I've never had an issue with Verizon, minus hardware support for buying phones used out of contract, they've always helped and even provided the extra sims when necessary. Apple's customer service beats every company hands down.

I'd keep your hotspot. Like you said it's more portable. The ipad GPS still works as long as you have a hotspot/wifi to connect to. I have the verizon LTE hotspot on my phone (with unlimited data/hotspot) so I'm just sticking with wifi model...

I want to say no, because they won't register MEID/esn's from other carriers, hence why you can't buy an unlocked iPhone 4s and call Verizon or Sprint and activate. So I'd say the cdma portion of the phone is carrier locked at the carrier itself.

As long as you don't turn off your phone line for data. I believe you could suspend the account for a time frame (still have to pay monthly to hold the line) but if you say switch to a dumb phone, and then come back expecting to have unlimited, you will not.
