Can't really go wrong with a Nexus 7, either. I think someone who doesn't use a PC may have some trouble with Android, however.

I haven't used Google Maps for iOS yet, however on Android you have the option to take the most direct route or a route with less traffic. Check the settings for the app if there are any.

Maybe the Nook HD? I can't remember exactly which model it is, but the newer one with the front-facing camera. That or a Kindle HD. Simplicity + functionality. Talk him into the iPad mini, though.

My favorite thing about TiPb is that it's where I learned how to do absolutely everything with my iPhone back in the day, and if I win an iPad 2 it will be where I learn how to do everything with it.
