Problems with macOS Sierra & Exchange Email

I just set up my new iMac this week and I'm having a major issue with my Exchange email account.

It seems to just endlessly be loading messages. At several times, the mailbox has been up to date at least in terms of what is being displayed, but it is still loading tens of thousands of messages. This morning it wasn't updated. I took all mailboxes offline and back and it loaded most but not all of the new messages since last night--it was only a few.

I remember when I set up my MacBook Air it was very fussy with Exchange and took a long time to actually sync up. With all the same settings, the account is working properly on the MacBook now but still not on my new iMac. (I transferred data over to the iMac from the Macbook using Time Machine.)

Any ideas? Searching the web makes clear this is not an isolated problem, but there are no clear fixes. Help!

P.S. Why didn't Apple give the same option to limit the timeframe of messages to load like on iOS devices?
