Slow mid 2009 macbook

My mid 2009 macbook is a little slow. How can I determine the cause?

If it's running slow after a wipe and fresh reinstall of os x, then chances are it's just due to hardware being old. A fresh install of the operating system is the only way to rule out the issue being caused by software.
