Welcome to iMore! You will want to click and hold on the green full screen button on the window until the window shrinks slightly and either the right or left side of the screen becomes shaded blue. Click on any other open window, or open a new window, and it will fill the other side of the screen.

Just to add...if you have you desktop set to grey you won't see a green button, it'll be a grey circle with 2 arrows in it in the top left corner of your screen.
