I'm not sure I would want my main computer to be a 12-inch, but if you have an iMac, I think you'll be fine.
Re: Downsizing 15" to 12"
The 12" MacBook is my only computer right now (my other one is provided by the company, so that doesn't count). And it works just fine as my primary. When I need more screen space, i hdmi out to my 23" samsung monitor.
Given the same basic tasks similar to OP, the MacBook is fine for me as a primary.
Re: Downsizing 15" to 12"
Took the plunge today, got a 1.2/512gb, going great so far, finally Apple have a laptop that is comfortable on your lap and doesn't burn a hole in your legs haha. It got a bit warm setting up but back to normal use its cool. We have a 15" and 13" Mpr in the house.
Keys are actually bigger on the 12", sound is great, so thin and light, not seeing much difference in speed or smoothness yet for what i do. Don't think i will be keeping the iPad air 2 and the 15" is going.
I got $100 off so in Australia was $2100. Yep we get screwed here.

I agree with Robster33 on the performance. My experience has been great so far. I've been ripping my kids' dvds, so they can be played on an iPad. I'm surprised to see that the time took to rip dvds on the MacBook vs on my i7 windows gaming laptop wasn't that significant.
Re: Downsizing 15" to 12"
Thanks, its nice to be totally wireless. Have only used the usb adapter for time machine and my iPhone. Being so small and light you wouldn't want wires hanging out of it. Its grab and go like a iPad. The charger is good, long lead and no green light. Just like charging a iPad/iphone. Just charge overnight. The sound is unbelievable for a laptop.
