Am I mistaken, or is the screen real estate of the 2015 MacBook quite small? Since retina displays do some kind of pixel-doubling thing, isn't the screen real estate effectively 1152 by 720, making it even less screen real estate than the 11" MacBook Air, which has a native resolution of 1366 by 768?

720 vertical pixels on a 2015 laptop is pretty underwhelming in my opinion. Prepare for a lot of vertical scrolling on the new MacBook.

Apple said it had 1440 pixels. So that should be the optimal retina mode. I assume you can also force it to run up to 2880 pixels. That's how my 15" retina works anyway .

On my wife's 15" retina MacBook the native resolution is 2880 by 1800 pixels (Retina), but when you run in optimal retina mode, the vertical pixels is only 900. Everything just looks sharper. If you run at 1800 everything on the screen is so tiny, you can't see anything. I bet it is the same on the new MacBook, essentially giving it a vertical resolution of only 720 pixels. No doubt everything looks great, but you just don't see much of it on the screen at any given moment. It is so weird the way Apple does its scaling.

I am sorry, but don't think you are fully familiar how retina screens work on Macs. At the Apple recommended ‘optimal’ default retina resolution, you only get 720 pixels (not 1440). Things look great, but you only get 720 vertical pixels. That's it. If you chose to pick one of the other scaled resolutions, it just doesn’t look the same. There are a lot of jagged edges and artifacts on non-optimized apps.

I understand what you're saying, but the way you're saying it is a little weird and I don't think they're understanding you correctly.

The display has 1440 vertical pixels, but everything is displayed the same as it would be on a screen with 720 pixels; everything is just more crisp. Meaning everything will appear pretty large and not much will fit on the screen at once.
