In my search for a clean but cheap MBP to sit in my desk at work and be used for only random web browsing & sending video emails to my customers, I found a 2009 model that looks to be like new except for an undiagnosed issue where the screen freezes every so often, but the owner says that's the extent of problems...

    I can buy for $200.

Deal or no deal? I don't want to but for $200 & then sink another $300 into a fix, you know?

Get him to diagnose the issue before you make a decision or at least get them to full restore and see if the issue remains.

It's border line but personally I wouldn't without more info

My mind exactly. I can buy a nice 2011-2012 for not much more.

Think you've answered your own question there then

Also, 2009 is pretty old now and won't have High Sierra

I am not confident buying a used laptop of any kind from a private party. If I was in the market and wanted a refurbished it would be from a known retailer and offering a warranty.
You don't know what you're getting. I work hard for my money.
I bought new a 2015 able to get on payments. I personally prefer new and even though 2015 I know I have a great Mac Pro. I researched and the 2015 suit my needs. No issues. Love it

It's your money. Buy smart. Sometimes saving a buck will cost you more and give you many headaches

The macbook is awesome and will last for years purchasing new for me has been well worth it. I have a 2012 and the latestest model and both work flawlessly. What a difference between Microsoft and Apple

It a pity you missed out on Amazon's 1 day only sale yesterday. They had a Mid 2012 Macbook Pro (Non Retina) for about $650. It's still relatively expensive but at least you know it's in perfect condition. 😃

If I see a sale for a Macbook in the next couple days or weeks I'll definitely come back here and post it for you.
