So - is this a bug or a malfunctioned display? (8-bit issue)
Upon waking my MacBook Pro 13" (retina) from sleep, the colours some times turn inverted it seems. This happens on some particular colours and shades, not the entire screen. It seems like the colour depth goes down to 8-bit. The MacBook is but a month old.
Any ideas?

That looks like a graphics issue. I would try a NVRAM reset first to see if it clears up the issue. Here is a guide by Apple on how to do it. You can also try a SMC reset as well. Here is a guide by Apple on how to do it. If either of these does not work, and you have warranty, I would call Apple Support or make a Genius appointment to have it looked at.
