I will have to agree on the base price. By the time you add a few upgrades it is going to be out of a lot of peoples price range. I was going to maybe purchase one, but the BTO I would need is going to be expensive. Still up in the air though.
Expensive, as per usual.
But worth it, as per usual.
For some reason I was expecting the new MBP's to be more expensive. I don't currently have any plans to buy one (though I'd love it I'm sure), but the pricing seemed just about right. Just my opinion though!
Too rich for my blood. And the touch strip didn't wow me enough for me to even try and justify the cost. I have no immediate plans to purchase.
Way too expensive.
Says the Corvette guy.
Expensive [emoji23]
I was all set to purchase, assuming the 15" base model would be 16GB and *hoping* 512GB SSD but would have bought at 256GB, but not for $2400. That's just too much, IMO. I even have a connect for an Apple "Friends and Family" discount of 15% but still...I'll stick with mid-2014 15" for another year to see how this one shakes out.
Pricey, but what did we expect. And Apple were smart to only offer the Touch ID on the more expensive model. I like the Touch ID, but not sold on the TouchBar thingy. Sort of reminds me of the new enhancements to iMessage. Yep, millennial' stuff...
I'll be getting as many years out of my mid 2014 13" 256GB MBP as I can. There is no way I would spend $2299 CAD for the new one. If I needed a new one today, I'd go out and get the 2015 for $1799.
I think everyone will nod in agreement. Definitely a very high starting price. $1,799 is just $200 short of what a entry 15" Macbook Pro used to sell for. At least the 'Non Touch bar' version is still $1,499 so you can still get all the performance. :)
Not surprised at all! All I need is to win the lottery!
Well I have a 2012 (13 inch) Mac Book pro and was considering upgrading sometime next year but with those prices it looks like it will be a bit longer than that. 1800 dollars for a 13 Ich mac book is way too expensive. Back in 2012 my folks bought me the mac book for Christmas. They got it from Best Buy for 1,000 which is expensive but reasonable (at least for apple). But now Apple is getting a bit ridiculous with the pricing. I understand they sell products that are considered premium and Apple is a company really geared towards the upper class but really are starting to leave college students and average joes out in the cold with these prices.
Far too expensive for me. I'll stick with my 2015 MBA and Function Keys :)
I'm not surprised they're so expensive, just because Apple has a tendency of introducing new Macbook designs at a premium (think the original Macbook Air). They'll probably drop back to reasonable prices by the 2nd or 3rd revision. My problem is that I really could use a new computer this year, and haven't fully decided if I should just bit the bullet and pay more!
Looking on the positive side, now that the newest is the 'premier' laptop to have, perhaps we'll see some opportunities and price drops on slightly older and refurb models. Gotta look on the bright side!
I was definitely interested in the new updates, but I'm sad that they bumped up the entry level price (I'm just going to pretend that the ridiculously old MacBook Air does not exist.)
Expensive but they believe they are a premium product.
It's too expensive. I hope by next year they go back to previous pricing and this is just temporary. Would also be nice to see Apple have a low end laptop in the $700 that can be similar to the white MacBooks of the past, have the same processors and other important things, not be as thin and cost Apple way less to make as a way to have good affordable Mac's too.
While they've usually been priced at a premium, the new prices seem a bit steep.
always premium prices
I have a 2009 15" MBP with the matte screen, which cost me roughly GBP £1250 new. Now the lowest priced 15" model is nearly double the price. I appreciate the Apple premium, but worried I might have purchased my last Macbook
I know apple products have always been expensive and with reason but this time around, given my economical situation is exactly the same as before, the prices make these new MBP that much more unattainable for me.
I know a lot of people who tried PC and MAC to work and stayed on MAC, some programmers (actually to code Android) and musicians, so there has to be something good about it, I won't be the one to buy one, I always though those are expensive but because I won't use that way, my father has an old MBP and a new (about the same price) Toshiba with better specs and he prefer to work in the MBP, again it's just because the optimization for the software he uses it is better I guess.
Based on previous purchases, everything is about $100 more than what I expected.
Very expensive, as usual, and even more expensive for those working in a currency which isn't dollars!
Placed my order for Space Grey 13" middle processor, 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD, with AppleCare and a few cables, it's $3,840.00 (Australian $$$'s). This is challenging for most people (even those with the spare cash). So I decided to compare with a similarly spec'd updated Microsoft Surface Book, it was well over $4,000.00 (AUD).......to that helped me a bit.
Everyone things that Apple is more expensive, and whilst I agree it's hard to do an Apples to Apples comparison, I believe that the equivalent alternate notebooks in the market are at the same value point.
Replacing all my adaptors is a rather large pain (last count for my old 2011 MacBook Air 3 x VGA, 2 x HDMI, 2 x Ethernet, not to mention various USB cables).
One final point is my 2011 MacBook Air is really still going along super well (i7, 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD), so the higher price up-front is more than balanced with the years of service you expect from a MacBook Air or Pro. This laptop will continue to serve in our house, likely until the magic smoke comes out in some way over the coming years).
I think Apple could have communicated more clearly that the "old" MBPs are still available – to pay a bit more for the "future, next-gen" notebooks would be more understandable then…
Of course! looking on the bright side is always the way to go. Im sure you could even pick up the old, old Macbook with the 5,400 PM hard drive. (While stocks last) Probably get deals way below $900
people will still buy, no matter what the price
I always say that the price of the apple products is FAIR. Because of the quality and the material they use.... bla bla bla. But those new models is kinda overpriced for a small touch bar. Nothing new. Just a touch bar.
I agree. I'm OK with premium pricing for a premium product, but increasing even the entry fee is a tough pill to swallow. (I think we'll all just pretend the 13" MacBook Air doesn't exist!)
Apple's answer to that is "we'll sell you last year's model at last year's price." I get it—last year's MacBook Pro is probably more than enough computing power for the vast majority of users—but it's still LAST year's model. I don't really agree with Apple's pricing decision but they didn't ask me for my opinion. [emoji849]
I don't think the pricing is bad at all. If you look at similarly spec'd machines, you'll be spending about the same. For what you get, I think it's a good price point. If you're just looking for the latest and greatest and don't have a need for the extras, there's still an upgraded 13" with function keys that's cheaper.
It doesn't matter that we're going into 2017 & people are comparing the price of these to MBPs they bought 5+ years ago, they're going to complain anyway. I bought my fully upgraded 15" MBP in 2012. It has 1TB, matte screen, 8GB RAM & a 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i7....it cost me about $3500, and it's still a great machine. I don't expect this new MBP that I get to cost the same as the one I have now. I expect it to be much more expensive. Years have passed & things have changed. It's not a good investment for everybody.
Like others have stated Apple has always charged a premium for their products so I didn't think they would be "affordable", but I was a bit disappointed that the entry point for their cheapest model wasn't a couple hundred bucks lower.
I upgraded two years ago so luckily for me I'm not currently in the market but my husband is and unfortunately we will have to pass on these models given the cost of we upgraded the specs to what he needs.
Pricing, for me is in-line with what I typically buy when I upgrade. I tend to max out, but this time I know the 2TB SSD drive is more than I need. My last Retina MacBook Pro 15" (early 2013 I believe) totaled about $5000. So, with Apple Care + will be about $4000, I believe.
very expensive
Pricing out the middle class.
Hearing the prices announced completely took the wind out of my sails. Even at the old prices, a new MBP was going to be a tough one to budget, but now I just feel like I can't do it at all.
Kind of a bummer for me, I'd love to get one but I typically add some upgrades and it pushes it just a bit outside my range.
They are expensive but they last a long time. My 11 year old uses my old 15" 2008 MBP and works fine for her needs. I have the 2013 maxed out 15" MBP and works great for FCP, Lightroom and ripping blu-rays for Plex. I'm just a hobbyist so I don't need every new model that comes out. When the day comes to get a new laptop it will be a MBP again. Expensive but worth it.
I would also agree, especially considering you are going to have to add at least a few options (more memory anyone? )!
MacBook Pro's are always super expensive. If they were 200-300 cheaper, I'd buy one.
Too rich for me, thank god mine is still running smoothly. Guess that's the premium of getting a mac. They last.
it's a little pricey. as always in the beginning i complain but somehow always pay for apple products. I'm a photographer in need of a new laptop as i have an old MBP.
always premium prices
I'm disappointed. I appreciate the innovation of making things smaller, tighter, lighter, etc, but I also would appreciate innovation in providing quality technology and the same or lower price. Knowing Apple, I would expect a price reduction a year down the road because they will have worked out the supply chain to streamline the process and the pricing.
The pricing in the U.K. is astronomical. Thanks Brexiteers.
Hahaha. Yeah, they didn't ask me either... Weird. I know last year's model is cheaper, and I know MacBooks tend to last longer than general PCs, but I still want the latest and greatest if I'm going to upgrade.
The average working class person cannot afford Apple's new laptops. That's a shame.
It is expensive, but I have to say it is worth it. It might be underpowered in comparison to a pc you can self-assemble with the same amount of money, but you are paying for the sleek design, support from apple (without mentioning all the exclusive apps) and a small taste of the future of computing. We all agree that we don't buy Macs because of their power, but for the expertise Apple has in both software and hardware.
Yeah, but last gen's model had all of that. The TouchBar is not worth $300. It's just not. The pricing on these devices are ridiculous.
This year model increase by 20% or about $350 for the $2,399 model. But then you need to buy the additional dongles for: iPhone, usb3.0, SD Card, HDMI, Displayport, etc... I say 3 dongles average throw in additional $100 and AppleCare $300.00.
With sales tax, will be close to $3K.
Its pricier but in lots of ways the new Macbook is better in usage
I think it's logical to go up the price-ladder: the industry is selling fewer and fewer PCs, so to make as much or more money they have to become more expensive. Plus: users replace them less often, so overall spending should still drop despite the price increase.
It is a shame, but Apple has never marketed their products to anyone and everyone. They make the products they think are best and whoever can buy them, does.
I feel it's slightly expensive but they are a premium product and this is roughly the price they usually come out
Yeah, but Apple isn't really in the habit of discussing the old stuff. They want all the focus on the new and better.
The new Macbook Pro is a lot more expensive than I thought it would be, and it only has usb C connections (well the 13 inch has lightning too I hear) so you would have to buy adapters and some of them like USB and Ethernet are probably around $20 - $30 dollars, VGA and HDMI are in the $60-$70 range, plus relative sales taxes (if applicable) on top of that. Not sure if the new MBP is a realistic purchase for me.
It is quite steep. Considering switching to a PC. The spectre looks nice
As mentioned by some people above, the HP Spectre is a compelling option at its price point. If Apple had sliced the 15" price down to the $1100-1500 range, then it's quite worth it. At the moment, though I like the concept, I don't have much of a use case of the Touch Bar, and certainly can't justify the premium to have that feature.
And Apple's best-selling product can't even be plugged into it out of the box. What a crock!
I wanted to max out a 15" but then I realized I could make a sweet battlestation for the same price....
Way too expensive for my budget
"That's no MacBook Pro...It's a spacestation"
The more I think about this, the more of a disaster I think these devices are. The lack of ports make this a non-Professional computer.
Go Illini, BTW (I'm a Fossil, FYI)
I can't see Apple ever bringing a 15" laptop down to the $1100 range. If they ever do, I'll be first in line!
Agreed.
Maybe I'm price sensitive, but it's just crazy that they have no updated laptop that is under $1k. The MBA has to appeal to a huge number of users if they would only update the thing...I would love a mac, but there's no way I can justify that price.
Are you talking about the pro or just the macbook? For my use case, the macbook is spot on what I need, but even it's pricing seems crazy high.
For the first time there a really great Windows PC on the market, and except for Microsoft, they all seem cheaper for sale specs. Now they do all come with Windows, but it makes it hard to spend money $3000 for top 15" or $2000 for top normal key 13". I know MacBook Pro is the right answer, but hard to convince the people in charge of the money at my office.
expensive yeah. but i will totally agree to whoever says macbook pros are also great laptop.
my macbooks are paid for by my work. don't really care :)
Considering the 2015 MacBook 12" can be had for under $1k, and it still sells (ie: was on Woot! recently), there's certainly a market for this or an MBA in the sub-$1k range.
Edit: Speaking of Woot!... https://forums.imore.com/e?link=http...token=uUcFpY90
The price is "PRO" users like video editors and designers. Wish they had refreshed the MacBook Air.
I fell like the non touch bar should be more cheaper
Hmm I think it's perhaps a little steep for the top end models. I just configured one to it's highest spec and it had easily passed £4000. Rather a lot of money, at least for me at the moment. I would like the new one despite my reservations about the ports situation, but I just can't afford that at the moment.
I think Apple will always keep one laptop under $1k, but it will never be the newest and greatest. I think we'll start to see the iPhone pricing model applied. As new laptops are introduced, the old versions will be bumped down the price spectrum.
Far too expensive, but I've been waiting so long!
It really is expensive
I'm holding out hope that by the time I am ready to upgrade the price will drop similar to how it did with the macbook air. Right now, I think the price increases are risky if they want people to invest in the machines, especially because many people realize that it will be difficult at the start with the amount of adapters.
Premium price for a premium product.
Premium pricing is normal for Apple products...especially for the MBP's...it is a premium product and from my point of view, the usability seems to last longer than cheaper priced windows products. I am still using my 2010 MBP for work, and though it struggles at times, it is still a work horse...even at almost 7 years old. :)
I had expected that the cheapest new macbook 15 inch would be around €2000. The starting price of the macbook 15 inch was this price in 2014 and 2015.
