Hi, I'm having serious troubles to figure out what's wrong with a mid-2012 13" MBP.

Basically upon turning it on, it shuts down a bit short after the progress bar with the apple logo appears. Pls refer to this video:

I've tried all this and always see the same behaviour:
  • Resetting PRAM & SMC
  • Swapping RAM with that of another working Macbook
  • Swaping the hard drive with that of another working laptop
  • Booting in safe mode (command S)
  • Booting with a USB drive with a bootable image of OS Sierra

I ran the onboard diagnostics (command D) and came up with no hardware errors.

I don't know what else to try.

Input greatly appreciated...

I had the same problem with my ssd. Your hdd or ssd is broken.

Here is how I still made a backup of all my data:

1. Install mac os x on a external hard drive
2. You can do this by:

1:
- Hold down Command (⌘)-R immediately after turning on or restarting your Mac. Release when you see the Apple logo.
- Now you are in the utilities screen select reinstall mac os x
- Select your external hard drive and install

This is the utilities screen:

2:
- Or you can install it on a different mac computer if you have one.

3. Hold down the OPTION key while booting and select your hard drive.
4. When your logged in try to get into the files of the main hard drive.

For me it said you can view the files on this hard drive but you cant use this hard drive.

If this isn't the case you can download third party software like diskwarrior to fix the hard drive.
Most of the time this only fixes the hard drive so you can view the files on it but not fix the hard drive entirely.

5. Put all the data from the main hard drive on your external hard drive.
6. When the backup is made you can need to go into utilities again and reinstall mac os x on your main hard drive this time.

For some people their hard drive is fixed when they reinstall but I don't think this is the case.

Goodluck, I hope you can still make a backup!

So I left the computer under the sun and managed to get it to work like before... with one exception: the power button: it does not respond at all. I replaced the keyboard with a brand new (the power button is attached to it with a ribbon) but still no dice... same issue :(

My son sprayed liquid on the keyboard... a very small amount got in. Computer now works fine... except the power button. Had the keyboard replaced but button remains unresponsive. Don't know what to do :(
