To keep my purchase price down, I may opt to go with a 256GB SSD instead of the 512GB. How do I best migrate data from my current machin's drive if that one has a 500 GB HDD?

If you don't have 500 GB of data on it, it shouldn't matter. Will the amount of data you have on your current "machine" greater than the amount of storage space on your new machine? If not, get a USB stick and transfer your files. If your data is greater than the 256 GBs you mentioned above then you can either zip some of them or offload some onto an external drive or cloud service or delete the things you no longer need.

I just downsized from 1.5T (2drives) to one 500G. It surprised me that I could do it. I had very little space before. I actually have more now. The key for me was to not migrate from the old. I installed only programs I use and put some old unused files on a backup external.
