My wife's 2013 Macbook Air suffered an early demise - death by coffee - and she's had to get a new Air. I'm wondering if there's any way to use the PCIe-based SSD from her old Macbook Air as an SSD in my 2011 Macbook Pro. Is there some slot it would fit, or is there some kind of adaptor available? Thanks for any help!

As of now, AFAIK, no. There are no adapters.

There's no way or using it in the 2011 MacBook. But you may be able to get an enclosure for it to use it as an external drive. Check OWC.

I thought the storage is part of the motherboard. Was under the impression you can't remove it on the retina MacBook pros. I am new to Mac but I think the MacBook Pro 2012 is the last upgradable MacBook.... Correct me if I am wrong here.

Not true. Memory (RAM) is soldered to the motherboard and is not replaceable. Storage (PCI based SSD) is on a daughterboard and may be replaced by a third party solution although this will void your warranty.
