Snow Leopard and Yosemite partitioning advice.

I have a 2.53 (2009) MacBook Pro with 4 partitions. Snow Leopard -240 GB; Mavericks - 45GB; Windows -30GB; and DVD Backup - 4.5GB. I have upgraded the software I can to Mavericks but there are a few that are not upgradeable but which I rely on every day. I'm thinking that I'd like to upgrade to Yosemite as well.
So here's my question. Would I be better off cloning my hard drive and then re-partitoning my hard drive and give more to Yosemite and then re-loading? Or should I just get a 500 GB 7200 rpm HD; partition that and then use my old drive as an external disk?
