Is there a way to Bootcamp Windows 7 from USB on a MacBook Pro (early 2011) that has had the Optical Drive replaced with a HDD. I have a copy of Windows on DVD, and an ISO from MS website (which I installed on my 2013 iMac).

I've read conflicting views on whether it's possible. I've tried using the DVD with a Samsung External DVD Drive but it isn't recognised.

Will an Apple Super Drive work? Do I need to force the EFI to accept the USB or has this been stopped in Mavericks?

If anyone in the same situation has successfully completed this task, please, tell me how.

    Thanks in advance.

I don't think it would matter which external drive you are using. My questions are about the DVD you have. Is the DVD you are using an installation disk? Are you trying to run the program like it is installed on the disk as an external drive or are you just unable to install it to Bootcamp?

It a Windows Installation disc that I am trying to install to a Bootcamp partition. But Bootcamp doesn't get past the first stage as Bootcamp (not OS X) doesn't recognise the DVD Drive.

Found this Dual-Boot Windows 7, Boot Camp, No Optical Drive Needed from the search below. I have a 2011 MBP as well, but am using Parallels to run my Windows 7 VM. Considered Bootcamp at one point, but liked the fact that I didn't have to fully reboot to get into Windows or OS X.

Like Dog5000 I also use parallels instead of boot camp. I would think any drive would work. I use a non apple external drive with no problems. You can try another external optical drive or even another PC or Mac's drive to install. Here's more info for that: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14195.
