I swear my MacBook Pro non-retina looks simply amazing (very clear, very noticeable) compared to what it was. This all happened after I installed Mavericks.

I can't explain it, but the display looks drastically better.

Why wouldn't it be possible? Apple tweaked the color profile? I know this is the case for my MBA. The default color profile is not washed out anymore after mavericks.
