Why can't I use the volume control buttons on my MacBook air

When I try to adjust the volume controls on the keyboard it flips to another page. What I'm I doing wrong? I've gone into the sound settings under settings and everything looks good. Does it have to do with The fact that I use headphones most of the time? Thanks in advance for any help.

I was having the same issue - go to system pref - keyboard - uncheck boxes F1,F2, and keyboard brightness. Don't ask me why, but worked for me. best of luck.
