So, with the new Mac Pro and OS X Mavericks coming... I've been craving a new rig. My last Mac died a while ago... but my MacBook Pro is still going strong. Anyway, I'm quite frankly not trying to drop a lot of dough on a new one. So, I'm considering building a custom rig that can run OS X. A feature in this months issue of MacWorld had a story about their Bride of FrankenMac build...

Bride of Frankenmac: The illicit PC that runs OS X faster than a Mac Pro | Macworld

I'm considering something along these lines. Anyone here have experience with stuff like this? Would you undertake a build such as this, or just buy an off the shelf Mac Pro?

From the little I understand building a hackintosh is tough because you have a very limited set of components to pick from that actually have driver support, etc. so while I've built my own Windows PCs before, I wouldn't bother because of the hassle inherent in building the hackintosh.

I've built and used a hackintosh before. Everything worked except FaceTime. The machine was powerful and worked for everything I needed.

I've done it before and it's not too hard to do if you know anything about troubleshooting. There's plenty of guides and information available through some simple Google searching. Gigabyte, Intel, and Nvidia are your best shots at compatibility. The rest isn't too particular.
