Why aren't my keyboard volume buttons working anymore?

Keyboard Volume & External Soundcard

I have connected an external soundcard on my Mac mini, but the keyboard volume buttons are not working. It shows a light grey image on screen.

I have selected the soundcard as main. There is playback, but, at full volume.

Now I have to get up and change the volume on the soundcard volume knob. Frustrating.

Is there anyway to bypass this so I can sit on my sofa and just control the volume from my keyboard.

Btw- the volume bar at the top is set at full and I cannot control it with the mouse either.

Mac mini. i7. Yosemite.

Does the external device have an app to control it? Or an install program that adds controls for it to the Mini?
