I will be buying a Mac mini and reckon I will need to expand the USB port availability with a hub.

Does anybody have a recommendation for a specific hub?

Also, is there anything not immediately apparent that I should keep in mind when plugging peripherals in (for example, I assume I should plug a usb3.0 external drive straight into the machine rather than via a hub).

    Many thanks in advance!

No particular r commendation, but as to where to plug an external drive, it shouldn't really matter if it's a powered hub (separately plugged in). If the hub is powered from the USB connection with the Mac mini, then I agree that the external drive should directly plug in.

Would definitely recommend a powered (plugged in) USB hub. I got a cheapish one off Amazon a few years back and it's running strong. Just get the highest grade one you can get (USB 3.0)

You'd better get a powered USB 3.0 hub. And there wouldn't be problem to power an external hard drive.
I peronally use a 4-port one from HooToo. It's fast and strong.
