Mac music software question

The band Rush has always been one of my favourites. I visited their website, which lists all the gear each member uses on the current tour.

Guitarist Alex Lifeson uses 2 Apple MacBook Pro 2.6 Ghz Laptops running Apple?s Mainstage and Native Instruments Guitar Rig 5.

Are there any musicians here who know what Mainstage and Native Instruments Guitar Rig 5 are and what this software does?
