Should I upgrade to 5.0.1 if I'm using an iPhone 4s?

Of course, I intend to jailbreak as soon as pod2g finishes the JB for A5 devices.

The untethered jailbreak for A5 devices will be based on 5.0.1 firmware first and later for 5.0 (if they follow how they are doing A4 devices).

well are they doing the A5's the same as the A4?

According to this tweet by pod2g is the reason I upgraded my 4S to 5.0.1.

“@pod2g: BTW: A4/A5 users, don't update to 5.0.2 when it's out, that would cut your jailbreak possibilities.”

Cool I had this question too. Have way to many twitter people to find his tweets.

I know what you mean about up to date and correct information regarding jailbreaks. There's alot of fragmented information and you have to look in several places.

BTW, I upgraded to 5.0.1 just a few days ago and I have better battery life on my 4S.

I'd still like one of the hacker devs to chime in and clearly endorse what to do. Still nervous.

Did you see the tweet from pod2g that I pasted in an earlier post? That's an endorsement for me. I have clarification from other forums (modmyi, macrumors, here) that 4S users should upgrade to 5.0.1.

Technically, no, it's not. It just says not to go to 5.0.2 . Can you post links to the other threads where people have recommended to update to 5.0.1?

http://modmyi.com and http://pod2g-ios.blogspot.com/ have folks reporting that its ok to upgrade to 5.0.1 on the 4S. I upgraded because when iOS 5.1 comes out I don't want Apple to close out signing the 5.0.1 firmware and force me to upgrade to 5.1.

Stay at 5.0 if you want. I highly doubt pod2g is preparing a 5.0 untether jb first for the 4S before the 5.0.1 firmware. It doesn't make sense.

I have the same exact concern, but my point is that not Pod2g nor anyone else has explicitly said, "hey, I'm working on jailbreaking 5.0.1 on the A5 devices, so go ahead and update." Everything we "know" is really just conjecture and assumptions.

You are right pod2g hasn't said anything explicity for A5 devices on what iOS to stay on.

However, the software exploit they found for 5.0.1 for non A5 devices also exists in 5.0. Chronic dev team blog says they are also working on a 5.0 untether for non A5 devices.

The issue holding up the A5 jailbreak untether is how to inject the code is hardware. The same limera1n exploit (developed by Geohot) which injects jailbreak code for all the previous jailbreak won't work on A5 devices.

Also, pod2g's blog which I quoted says not to go to 5.0.2/5.1 when it's out.

Therefore, this is why I believe its ok to upgrade to 5.0.1 on A5 devices.

I ended up updating wirelessly right through my phone after when I remembered I could.

If you go under Settings/General/About, what is your build number under version?

Is it 5.0.1(9A405) or 5.01(9A406)?

I am betting its build 9A405.

Yea 9A405. Good or bad?

For the 4S, Apple has released 2 build versions of 5.0.1 firmware. 9A405 was the initial build number for 5.0.1 and the 4S. A week or two later they released 9A406 which said it addressed a sim card issue as well.
I am running 9A406 and that can only be installed via iTunes not via OTA like your build number.

Apple certainly makes 5.0.1 release confusing for iPhone 4S users.
