Update #1: redsn0w version 0.9.6b4 is now available for your 4.2.1 jailbreaking pleasure

per dev-team website after seeing the update on twitter

sorry cant post the link...not enough posts yet

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

    Thanksgiving with Apple
With Turkey Day a few days off, today Apple publicly released FW version 4.2.1. As always, ultrasn0w unlockers please stay far far away from this official firmware (and all official firmware). Wait for the ability to create custom 4.2.1. IPSWs that dont update your baseband! If youre not an unlocker, read on!

The best news of all is for owners of iPhone3G, older iPhone3GS, and non-MC iPod touch 2G. Due to a combination of our original pwnage2 exploit, the arm7_go exploit, 24kpwn, and limera1n, your device is just as jailbreakable as ever. You reap the full benefit of an untethered 4.2.1 jailbreak.

Next are the owners of all the more recent devices. The good news there is that due to geohots limera1n exploit, all recent devices can be jailbroken (this will be true until Apple released new hardware that fixes geohots limerain exploit in the bootrom). The bad news is that right now, the 4.2.1 jailbreak is *tethered* on all of these recent devices. A tethered jailbreak means that each time your device loses battery power or needs to be rebooted, you must attach it to a PC or Mac to boot into the jailbroken state. @comex is working hard on a method that may untether the 4.2.1 jailbreak, but it will require you to have your 4.1 SHSH blobs in order to use it. No word on how much more effort it will take though (please dont bug @comex about it!). (We also have an alternative method that may work, but @comexs method is much more elegant.)

So when does all this 4.2.1 jailbreak action happen? *)*Well if youre a JB developer or tinkerer, youve already probably used the redsn0w mentioned in our last post to jailbreak 4.2.1 and at least get SSH working. But beyond that, there are still some last minute issues with MobileSubstrate and comexs kernel patches that are being fixed. Well tweet and post a blog update when its all available (we hate to give ETAs, but barring any unforeseen problems, probably later today).*** It happens nowsee Update #1.

In the meantime, please make sure you have your 4.1 SHSH blobs for all your devices. These will be important even for firmware beyond 4.1 (using both comexs method and our alternative, depending on how each of them turn out.)

ultrasn0w unlock: After redsn0w is officially released with the new Cydia and kernel patches, well be able to assess the unlock situation. Its already looking very promising though, so expect the unlock for the 3G and 3GS to be coming this week. The i4 unlock is taking more effort though, and no further concrete info is available about that yet.

Didn't realize Cydia wasn't updated until after i installed it... going back to vanilla 4.2.1 for now.

I am a new iPad user. Although I have JB my iPhone.

Is this recommended for the iPad? I have saved my SHSH with TU and have upgraed to 4.2.1

I have a new iPad with very few apps installed. I have my SHSH on file and upgraded to 4.2.1. I would like to use many of my JB apps while away this week.

Is it OK to use this for now or not worth the risk? I am fine with reinstalling once the untethered comes out.

No. Please wait until they update all their tools, we will have a post on TiPb once its released. Almost everything currently on Cydia will not work on iPad 4.x anyway.

I don't really think its worth jailbreaking the iPad at this moment now that 4.2.1 is out. Once a more solid jailbreak is out AND Cydia is fully working, I will JB for sure though.

I don't plan to reinstall Backgrounder, as the only reason I had it was for apps like Pandora or TuneIn, and those support 4.2 backgrounding so I am happy with that.

I will reinstall things like InfiniDock, Shrink, Iconoclasm, MultitaskingTime, SimpleBackground for a scrolling wallpaper, and possibly a few other addons. Really though, 4.2 has made the iPad far more useful and less requiring of a jailbreak for me.

Can't wait to see what new features iOS 5 has to offer next year.

0.9.6b4 worked fine for me (cydia and mobile substrate are A OK) You just HAVE to remember to boot tethered every time (run redsn0w and use the "booth tethered" option). If you see the pineaaple in tethered boot you are "in".

Personally, I will wait for the untethered version for my i4, but my iPad got the untethered treatment today. It's a hassle to get everything up an running jailbreak wise with the tethering {ie: having to reboot tethered for installation completion for things like sbsettings, winterboard, etc...) but once "up to snuff" i feel little to no ill effects being tethered with the ipad, never really rebooted my ipad, at least not nearly as much as my iphone.

Thanks for the input - I appreciate it. I'll hold off for now... I think.

I JB for a lot of those same reasons and to also run a few hacked apps.

With that said, only beat up on me if your copy of Windows or Mac and Adobe CS, etc are 100% and purchased and intended for you. Otherwise, no commenting.
