just purchased an iphone 3g 8gig, running software 3.1.2, just wondered if this software is still jailbreakable? and would it be best to use blackrain or spirit. thanks in advance guys!

You will always be able to jailbreak the 3G. Use your tool of choice, at this point I'd use something like sn0wbreeze, pwnagetool or redsn0w

3.1.2 or 3.1.3 are fine. For the 4.x firmware wait until 4.1 is out and pwnage tool, redsn0w and/or sn0wbreeze are updated for it.
