I'm a regular user of this forum but I'm unable to find out if I can unlock my Iphone 3GS 3.1.3 with baseband 5.12.01. This is the original OS / baseband when I got my phone from AT&T. And credible pointers / info would be greatly appreciated.

Do I need to jailbreak first to install an unlocking app ? Should I use ultrsn0w or pwnage 4.0 ? I'm new to all this so a bit confused.

If this is possible, please post the steps on how you did it?

Can some accomplished members of this forum like Alli please help ? Thx a lot.

No steps needed. What program? Spirit does not work with 313

Ok, This is what worked for me.

    1. Downloaded and installed iTunes 9.1 (torrent)
    2. Downloaded Spirit JailBreak
    3. Connected Phone to PC
    4. Opened Spirit
    5. It said that my 3GS 3.1.3 was connected
    6. I then clicked on JailBreak and closed the program when prompted
    7. The phone restarted and ran its setup
    8. After that, the Cydia app was on my phone
    9. Click it
    10. It goes though a very long (20 minutes on my phone) reorganization process - just let it run
    11. Once that is finished, it restarted
    12. Click on Cydia > Sources > Manage > Add
    13. type ultrasn0w.com (notice the 'o' is a zero)
    14. Searched for Ultrasn0w and clicked install
    15. It went though its setup and restarted

My only problem is that I do not know how to confrim that it is infact unlocked. Any headsup?

I have 3GS 3.1.3 5.12.01, I used Spirit for jailbreak, then from Cydia, I used Ultrasn0w for unlock. It's easy and no errors

Thanks guys for your answers. One last question: Should I wait for a jailbreak / unlock on ios4 or should I just stay on 3.1.3 and unlock and maybe later upgrade?

Being patient and waiting has rarely let me down. I vote for waiting even though iOS 4 is an amazing upgrade that is bound to test your dedication to Jailbreaking and Unlocking. :-)
