Hi, I have 3G that I got from a friend on the cheap. He said it was JB and unlocked and using T-mobile.Its in recovery mode (hence that's why he gave it to me cheap, ) . He said he had someone do the unlock last July and I'm assuming using purplera1n . well I downloaded the iPhone 3g restore firmware 3.1.2 and when I try to recover , the process starts then I get an error. Is there possibly another way of forcing the restore with the 3.1.2. I definitely don't want to upgrade to 3.1.3.. Thanks for any help.:(

Yeah I want to but I cant get it out of recovery mode. I tried to manually install 3.1.2 but every time I get an error. I think Im going to have to go to 3.1.3 and just use it as a ipod and gps and hope for a unlock to 3.1.3.

Well, you can always try to restore to a custom Firmware using sn0wbreeze for Windows or PwnageTool for Mac.

Are you on Windows or Mac?

DFU RESTORE

Try the steps listed below, but make sure that you have downloaded the latest version of iTunes before attempting to do this.

Put the iPhone into DFU mode so you can do an iTunes firmware restore follow these steps:

Step One
Open iTunes and connect the iPhone to your Mac or PC.

Step Two
Press and hold the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button at the same time.

Step Three
After exactly 10 seconds, release the Sleep/Wake button. Continue holding the home button until iTunes pops up with a message telling you that it has detected an iPhone in recovery mode.

The iPhone screen will remain black.

NOTE***: It may take a few attempts to get your iPhone into DFU mode. Generally, I hold down both buttons then release the Home button just before I think the Apple logo would appear. If you are still holding both buttons down and you see the Apple logo you are holding them down for too long!

Step Four
Download from iTunes and install the latest firmware (3.1.3) and install it. Then, when it's done, simply either restore it from a previously created backup, or set it up as a new iPhone and re-sync all of your stuff back onto it.

NOTE: YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO JAILBREAK/UNLOCK ONCE YOU UPDATE TO 3.1.3.

However, if you were jailbroken/unlocked BEFORE your phone went crazy, you can use PwnageTool (Mac) or sn0wbreeze (Windows) to create a custom ipsw to update to instead of downloading stock 3.1.3 through iTunes, but that's a whole different guide.

If that's what you would like to do - DFU Restore by using a custom ipsw firmware created by PwnageTool/sn0wbreeze, then let me know and I will post a guide for that as well.
