It only has edge. When you use your phone, it uses that edge network FOR the call. You can't both be on the phone AND use the Internet on T-Mobile, unfortunately.

more correctly, it's not that it's on the edge network, edge is just a method of sending data, but the data and voice share the same connection/frequency/etc. thus when you're on a call it effectively blocks the data from getting through for the entire length of the call so your call doesn't drop
this isn't iphone or carrier specific, it's a catch of pre-3g gsm for every phone and carrier and for comparison purposes, the entire Verizon 2g and 3g network has the same problem.
