help with 3GS jailbreak.

i just recently bought an iphone 3gs....and it came with version 3.1 already on it.....i heard that if you buy the phone with that firmware already installed, jailbreaking cannot be done. it this true? if not.....can someone help me jailbreak and get the most out of my phone?
