I have a jailbroken 3GS and am planning on upgrading from 3.0.1 to 3.1.2. Do I still need my IBSS, IBEC, and ECID files to ensure future jailbreaking? Can I use the "iBEC_iBSS_Grabber" tool when I am restoring to the Custom 3.1.2 firmware?

I plan on following this tutorial to upgrade to the custom 3.1.2 firmware:

Save yourself the time. Just go into Cydia an allow it to save all that stuff for you.

Cydia only saves the ECID file, from what I understand. Do we still need to save the IBSS & IBEC files in order to allow future jailbreaks? Anyone up-to-date on this stuff?

You should be fine with what Cydia saves out. To this point the files have only been used for a signed/valid firmware, but if you point your hosts file to the Cydia servers instead, it will sign them with whatever ECID you have stored ( so far ).

So is the IBSS and IBEC not important then?

So long as you save your ECID with Cydia you're fine to be able to downgrade at a later date ( even after Apple says you can't ).

If you want to backup your files so you can run your own restore server:

So all we need is the ECID, not the IBSS or IBEC?? This is so confusing....
