I already installed it! The second I did, I rebooted the springboard, and from that second I've been in safe mode!

Do you think restoring and rejailbreaking are the only options?

A restore would always help me when something was wrong with my jailbreak.

Ahh, I see. Because so far, I'm out of luck. I tried reinstalling mobilesubstrate, I tried reinstalling winterboard, I even double checked ToneFX because I had a custom unlock sound. No luck on any of it. I didn't have ANY of these problems until the SECOND I upgraded that goddamned mobile substrate.

Not sure it's mobile substrate. I have the newest version on my 3GS & jailbroke a3G and 3GS today, both of which I installed the new mobile substrate on.

What other JB apps do you have installed? Maybe it's a conflict between the two.

Yes, safe mode is a savior. Without it your phone will just die. Restore it to before the jailbreak and be on your way. BTW, what method did you use to jb. I am hearing many crashing and issues like this with redsn0w. I used purplera1n. Never had an issue/

Ahh this happened to me yesterday, I was screwing around with jailbreaking and iNav themes, had to re-install mobile substrate and noticed that if I resprung too soon it would freeze the phone.

    Restore your phone in iTunes.

Do not restore from backup; new install.

    Re-jailbreak. Reboot.

    Install Cydia. Update and reboot.

Install Mobile Substrate; wait about 2 minutes when it's done.

    Respring, then reboot. Install Winterboard.

I updated mobilesubstrate this evening without any issues and I'm using winterboard. Like a previous poster said, it's likely a conflict with another JB app. What other apps do you have.

Well, I restored to the official firmware, and re-jailbroke with purplera1n. I REFUSE to use redsn0w based on how simple purplera1n is, and THUS FAR, I have not had so much as one single problem with purplera1n.

I THINK that the culprit app that was causing MY crashes was ToneFX. After I restored, rejailbroke, I tried installing it, and the second I hit "Restart Springboard", it put me back into safe mode, so I said the hell with that and deleted it. And everything seems to work fine now.

However - I do not think that the problems were due to a faulty jailbreak. So far, geohotz has delivered PERFECT solutions. And to prove my point, once I re-jailbroke, everything works like a dream.

Whereas with redsn0w, all I hear are problems, problems, problems. I guess thats what the Dev Team gets for releasing software that wasnt ready, just so they could say "Hey! We can do it too!", right after geohotz made them all look bad.

I used redsn0w to jailbreak my old 3G, and yes, it did work. But purplesn0w just frankly made the process so simple that a retarded child with ADHD could pull it off successfully.

I just dont understand what the hell went so wonky with the mobilesubstrate update. Im obviously not the only one who had problems with it, but the odd thing is that other people also had problems immediately after installing this update, all due to DIFFERENT conflicting packages!

Not to mention, ToneFX just updated their app to work with the 3G[s] as of 2 days ago, so I don't know what the hell is going on. I tried to contact Saurik, but I havent heard anything from him yet.

I'll keep everyone posted if I do.

I'm running a 3G[s], so I can't be sure how everything will react on a standard 3G. Sorry man!

Truthfully, my 3G didn't encounter ANY problems runnig redsn0w. Most of these problems seem to be 3G[s] related, so you just might be lucky enough to not have to worry about them....
