I opened an iTunes account to redeem, it will not let me

i opened an itunes account to redeem a gift from a friend. i followed the steps (click on redeem) and that option is not available to me. any suggestions?

Make sure the device you're using is connected to the Internet. Once that is done, follow the instructions given via the iMore Blog.
