How does an itunes library file get damaged and how can I repair it?

Out of the blue one day I opened itunes (itunes for PC) and a pop up appeared that an itunes folder had become damaged. Not sure how this happened. My music library seems to be fine but the hundreds of apps I've downloaded over the years no longer appear in itunes so I assume the damaged folder contains all my apps. How do I repair the damaged folder?

All my music and playlists are fine its just that all my apps have disappeared from iTunes. I guess its not a huge deal as I rarely use itunes on my PC and I can re-download any apps I've purchased in the past. It just bugs me that something went wrong and I'm not sure why. I guess its not worth the time trying to fix the problem when it really has little affect.
