itunes won't stay contnected to phone

I just picked up a new IP4 yesterday and am trying to move some stuff to it. When I open itunes, i connect the cable to the usb port and the phone. It will show the phone in the "Device" list for a few seconds, start a sync and then the device list goes away. The phone continues to say "Sync in progress" but it isn't doing anything.

Any ideas??
