Itunes doesnt let me jailbreak !

Ok my story starts something like this.... My friend gives me his iphone he just bought a first gen 4 gigs. i have itunes 8.2 So when i put the iphone to get to the point to update the firmware it says i have to register the phone and enter account info ? whats up with this i jailbroken alot of iphones allready please help me

You can check whether or not an unactivated iPhone is running the old firmware version by entering field test mode. Do this by invoking an emergency call, and dialing *3001#12345#* then pressing "Call". Tap "Versions," and you will see the firmware revision (which Apple has misspelled "firware").

When you entered *3001#12345#* did you include all the # & *'s?

Ok. Does your iPhone show a Sync Cable + iTunes logo or a Yellow Triangle?

Sounds like it may be at 3.0 or 3.0.1. Do you have a PC or MAC?

Jailbreak- Lets you download 3rd party apps.
Unlock- Lets you use your iPhone on T-Mobile.
