i just plugged my iphone in, and it started doing a backup, which took around 10-15 minutes. i've only had the phone since thursday, but had never had it take this long. normally it takes around 1 minute if that. after it finished, i hit the synch button again, and this time i didnt see the backup dialog, and the synch took place like normal, under 1 minute. is this common? does itunes only backup the phone every so often? thanks

It does a backup each time you plug it into your computer. If you sync again while it's plugged in it doesn't backup again.

It backs up everything except jailbreak stuff. If an app modifies iPhone OS settings, such as how SBSettings can change your battery bar into a numeric percentage, than it'll back up that setting too.

Yea, I'm backing up my old iPhone 3G and it's already been an hour, and the status bar in iTunes is only about two thirds done. Pain in the butt!

i did learn how to restore to a specific backup today! that was cool. i've noticed that my backups are taking a little less long now too. maybe it gets used to it after a while?
