My new car will charge my iPod touch but does not 'see' it to play from

I have always had my old iPod touch plugged into my car for music. I have a new car and the system can't see the iPod! It is the very first touch so quotes old but I am frustrated that this has happened. Does anybody know of anything I can do to get this up and running?

I *assume* the OS version is outdated, but have you played around with your car's media settings? Will it play in a friend's car that's fairly new?
