iMessage doesn't work

I've seen this happen before. Usually it results from super long messages or a large bunch of emoji. Did the hard reset work?

If all else have failed then you may want to back up your device, put it in DFU mode, connect it to your computer and via iTunes, select to restore it. This will cause iTunes to download and install a fresh copy of the latest iOS version for your device. Afterwards, you can either restored the backup you made it set it up as new. I recommend the latter, but not everyone have the time or desire to set up their device from scratch.

After I hold the power button for 3 seconds, do I release it?

Press the power button for 3 seconds and then press and hold the home button along with the power button for 10 seconds. After that, release the power button while still pressing the home button until iTunes detect the device in recovery (approx 8 seconds or so).
