I've been noticing that my iPod 4g battery hasn't been lasting more than a couple of hours at a time.
Any tips how to make it last longer?

There could be many reasons why the battery is not listing long like it used to be from faulty battery to settings or apps running in the background.
Is the iPod jailbroken? If yes have you installed any cydia tweak app recently? Have you modify your settings recently somehow to favor something like push mail, or brightness or background refresh etc...
I you can't really figure out what could be the reasons why the battery no longer last like usual, (and if it's not jailbroken) try backing up your iPod using iTunes then factory restore and use it without restoring from a backup for a while see if the battery comes back to normal or not. If it still last only a couple of hours after that then take it to the Apple store if you are still under warranty.

You won't lose anything as long as you back up the iPod to iCloud or iTunes.
