Transferring Library to new Laptop

So....my laptop is about to die. Fortunately I have a work laptop with iTunes installed, I have made sure home sharing is enabled on both. I have sync'd my iPod touch with the old laptop and then plugged it into the new laptop with the library showing the same 2000 (ish) songs that are in the library on my old laptop AND .......it only ever transfers the 196 I have purchased from iTunes meaning I have to go back to the old laptop again to reinstate the larger library. Most frustrating and I have tried several times. Any advice to make my new laptop sync all songs (not just the purchased one's) as I will have to phase out the old laptop soon before it goes to PC heaven.
