Question: Can I install both High Sierra and Catalina on a single (internal) HDD with 2 partitions? I'm confused about the APFS thing, because when I installed the High Sierra, it did not change the drive to APFS and remained HFS+. So does that mean that Catalina cannot co-exist with High Sierra on a separate partition on the same physical drive?

And if that is the case, which OS should best reside as an external drive? TIA

The Apple Support article below may help.
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208891

In the event you may not have seen them, sharing a search term "dual boot mac high sierra and catalina" which brings up articles from other sites.

I have not tried what you have asked about, nor those from the other sites. Before doing anything, suggest using Time Machine and backing up your Mac to an external drive before experimenting further.
