Before when I had my iPhone 5, I didn't use a passcode. I kept it off, unless I went somewhere I thought I should enable it. But since September, I keep my 6s Plus passcoded and also use the Touch ID.
Your 5c doesn't have Touch ID. When you upgrade to a phone that has that, you'll find it different in how you view security. Touch ID makes using a passcode more convenient.

What is Touch ID?? I'm upgrading September 2016

The finger print scanners (home button) on iPhone 5s and up.

I never used to use it, but since buying the SE I use and absolutely love it!!!!! I use to unlock the phone, Apply Pay, and signing to a lot of my apps. It's great.

You can scan your fingers into your iPhone. Once they have been scanned in and Touch ID is on, all you have to do is place one of the fingers you scanned onto the home button and it will open your phone for you. Finger print passcode instead of having to type in your numeric passcode.
