I had a family member ask me this the other night and I wasn't really sure how to go about it. Is it even possible, anyone have any ideas? Has anyone even done this before? Such an odd question but after thinking about it, it does kinda make sense.

I've heard that people have used old iPhones as baby monitors with an app that goes by their wifi to produce an image to your current phone. I heard about it on the news not quite sure it was less than a year ago.

Absolutely. I use a Foscam wifi cam. It has pan and tilt , motion detection and capture, two way audio, infrared and more. I just plug it in where I need it - just needs 120V. Then I use the Foscam Pro app with it. I also gave it set up so I can monitor when I'm away from home.

Right now it's watching a furnace that I had problems with. But it would be perfect for a baby monitor. About $65 at Amazon.

Never used it as my kids are past that age, but seemed to have good ratings and do what you asked. An AppStore search of 'baby monitors' brought back several other possibilities as well.

Then you will be in a FaceTime call and that will drain the battery. You also won't be able to pickup a call on an iPhone while doing FaceTime.

Yup. I've been testing out a few methods of using an old iPod as a baby monitor. There are some interesting apps out there that work pretty well. One problem I found though, no infrared light for watching the baby at night. The dedicated cameras almost all have infrared lights, and I think it's a necessity.

Me and my wife use our phones as baby monitors when we visit somewhere. It's not iphone specific but since we are unlimited minutes I make a call leave my phone on and leave the other side connected on speakerphone
