I went with an Apple leather case. I bought one for the first time with my last iPhone and really liked it. It protected my 7 plus so well that my 2 year old phone looks almost brand new. It’s pretty sleek and almost doesn’t add any bulk.

Few Apple Silicon, Otterbox Statement with the Leather, Speck Presidio and a Candyshell grip. Shell holster combo. Still looking for more, not sure why. Lol

Gear4 Battersea case. This case has the best grip and protection of all the cases I've tried so far. The main problem is that open power button is pretty had to work. It's like you have to spread the rubber with you finger before it actually hits the button. The outside edges of this case are just like the Tech 21 Evo Check cases. I feel 100% confident that my phone would be safe hitting the ground in this case. It's so sticky and grippy that I believe it will collect a ton of lint & dust.
That orange D30 material inside of the case is so NICE and luxurious !
The protection and grip of this case are bar none.

I like it, it’s grippy but can be a pain if you have greasy/sweaty palms. I like it a lot though

I placed an order for the Pitaka case. I've used it on all of my previous iPhones, and I really miss its minimal design. I held off on purchasing one for the iPhone Xs Max because of the stainless steel sides (the cases are very tight and the tops and bottoms are open), but I'm going to try and handle the phone carefully. I'm not too worried about drops because I've dropped my 8 plus with the same case on and there was no damage at all except for cracking my screen protector. (Unless the backs are different? Can anyone confirm? Thanks.)

Thanks. The built in screen protector was garbage. Took it out and now the case is much better.
VERY NICE... I'm now leaving this thread and never coming back! The temptation is too much...LOL
