"Plus" conjures up the old style with bezels. "Max" infers a new larger design. I have no issues with it.

Maybe because of the change in design. "Plus" name sticks to the 6/7/8 phones. "Max" starts a new design in a bigger size

If I do get the newer model, it will definitely be the XS model 64 gig in gold. As far as the Max version, being my hands now ache because of repetitive typing for 30 years, my days of having the larger Max model are over.

I suppose “Plus” denotes something additional whereas “Max” denotes the largest size.

I can’t wait to see how long it takes this time around for app developers to update their apps for the screen res on the Max.

Seems they took the idea from Motorola, Droid Maxx (yes 2 xx's and all) but it was to imply their bigger battery at the time, and Apple has emphasized larger battery this time. Also since their is no new "Plus" phones they could have easily continued it. Still bad form given all the bashing other mfg's get at times for using similar names or styling or whatever.

I think it might be because Samsung is copying the "Plus" name, so Apple moves to another name.

It's rumored that the Pixel 3xl will be called the Pixel Ultra this year, and while we're at it isn't the larger Google Home unit called the Google Home Max? Now that we have a Galaxy s9+ as well I think it's perfect time for the lawsuits to begin ...

The official explanation is that the Xs Max is “bigger than Plus size”:

Personally I think they should have gone with XS EXXXTREME.

Now watch Samsung release Galaxy SX and SX Max next March
